FUNK OFF
Type specimen | Artefact mock-up       2022
My roles: EVERYTHING

THE CLIENT

BEASTLY is a custom typeface designed for the Lubalin 100 project by James Edmondson from OH no Type Co.

THE BRIEF

Produce an artefact and a supporting type specimen booklet to celebrate a typeface of your choice [I chose the BEASTLY typeface].

THE APPROACH

Upon researching the origins of and inspiration behind the BEASTLY typeface, as well as analysing its structure, I concluded that the elements that make this typeface special are the combination of thick and hairline accents, as well as its friendly yet bold articulation combined with a hint of funkiness. This typeface can be used in various diverse ways- from headlining a satirical self-help column to being part of the identity of a sustainable children's clothing brand.
My big idea of how to celebrate this typeface was to produce an artefact and a supporting type specimen booklet that honors the funk origins of BEASTLY in a warm yet aggressive tone. 'The Unapologetic Groove' is the concept I decided to go with for this project. The contrast of this slab serif typeface proposes a topic of two opposites. The approach was to be passive-aggressive and put an audacious narrative in a warm & funky environment. 'Beastly' communicates in a pleasant way yet makes no apologies when unleashing the beast.

THE OUTCOME

To accompany the type specimen, the artifact I created to celebrate BEASTLY was a pair of chunky rings, who together put spell out 'Funk Off'. They communicate the idea of giving someone the middle finger without actually doing so. It's expressive. It's innocent. It's funky.

FEEDBACK

“Your process book is rich and vibrant, and you have clearly recorded the reasons behind the decisions you have taken. You also evidence relevant research that you have effectively synthesized to inform your tasks and outcomes. Your ideas show invention and insights. From materials to ideas generations, your process shows passion and enjoinment. I am pleased with the development of your specimen; your work demonstrates strong visual skills and a growing understanding of your chosen specialism.

Through logical positioning of components & alignment, you have established a clear typographic hierarchy bringing emphasis to key aspects of your type. Your artefact is also a meaningful response to the brief and effectively conveys the spirit of your type. Well done for producing the ring! There’s certainly evidence of promise in your work. You are passionate and eager to do well, and this is clearly reflected in your work.”
